Understood. The number of general officers killed is unclear with differing claims by both sides, but is likely now higher. The number of people killed on both sides, whether senior officers or otherwise, is going to increase as the conflict continues.

Regarding the hospital — yep, it’s becoming clear that both sides are operating with non-Western views of how to report casualties and what turns an off-limits target, such as a hospital, into a legitimate target. Right now, with limited access by independent media on the ground, I think we need to be cautious on what we say until the dust settled.

However, it’s clear that many of the worst offenses are on one side. It may not be all, but it’s a lot.

I think we need to recognize that while the United States military culture has embedded into it a grave fear of creating another “My Lai” incident with deliberately inflicted civilian casualties, that’s not the way a lot of the rest of the world thinks. Soviet-era military doctrine is the way the senior leaders on **BOTH** sides of this conflict were taught, and we’re going to have to expect things will be done not only by the Russians but also by the Ukrainians that would likely result in court-martials if this were an American military operation.
